The Former Favorite: Wow. The USA opened as the favorite to take the crown, and had remained in that spot until it lost to Italy on Tuesday night, 8-6. The United States is 3-1 in Pool B, with wins over Great Britain, Brazil and Mexico. Pool B will now come down to Wednesday’s matchup between Italy (3-0) and Mexico (2-1), and there is a chance Team USA is left out of the quarterfinals. If Italy beats Mexico, it will win Pool B and the USA will advance as the runner-up out of the group (owns the tiebreaker over Mexico). If Mexico beats Italy and scores at least five runs, based on the tiebreaker rules, USA will advance as well. Check out all the scenarios here.
The New Favorite: The D.R. is 3-0 in Pool D, and outscoring opponents 34-5. The D.R. has been mashing at the plate, leading the tournament in home runs (9) and isolated power (.373). The D.R. will take on Venezuela (3-0) to close out Pool D play on Wednesday, before Knockout Round play gets started on Friday.
