Draper and Rue’s Rainy Day Blues – Dogster

Welcome to the Wednesday Dogs of Dogster! Each Wednesday, we share a narrative from one in all our Dogsters. This week is about Meagan and her dynamic duo of dachshunds, Draper and Rue.

Spring in Alberta isn’t the identical as lots of the springs world wide. We don’t have blooming tulip fields such as you see on Instagram, and though the times have gotten longer, that doesn’t all the time imply they’re sunnier. Our springs are sometimes gloomy, dusty, unpredictable (cue random snow storms), and the melted snow brings lots of mud…particularly if it rains!

For our Dachshund duo, Draper and Rue, the moist season is much less about splashing in puddles like it’s for our 16-month-old and extra a couple of shared dread of the outside. These two, with their distinct personalities, unite of their mutual disdain for wet days.

Rue: The Reluctant Adventurer

Rue, our spirited outdoor-lover, is normally up for any problem. The rain and puddles truly don’t hassle her that a lot; she’s going to fortunately trot by means of a puddle or sit in mud, and he or she appears fairly unfazed. The truth is, generally I believe she prefers to be somewhat soiled. However, it’s what comes after a very wet day that makes her fear…bathtime!

When she hears the bathtub operating earlier than she even will get again inside, Rue is aware of what’s coming subsequent. She’ll attempt to dodge it, darting as quick as she will be able to to our white sofa to attempt to “disguise,” however her muddy path betrays her each time. The tub is non-negotiable for this muddy weiner.

Draper: The Rain-Hating Royal

Draper, our self-proclaimed King, has even much less endurance for rain than he does snow. If winter’s chilly was his nemesis, spring’s rain is his archenemy. The sound of raindrops pattering on the home windows is sufficient to make him burrow his face deeper into his blanket fortress, refusing to emerge except bribed with treats. Getting Draper outdoors on a wet day is a negotiation that rivals high-stakes diplomacy. He’ll inch towards the door, sniff the air, and promptly retreat, his expression screaming, “Completely not.” He’ll do his enterprise instantly outdoors our door (alongside the tiny strip of dry deck to keep away from getting moist).

On the uncommon events we coax him out, Draper’s low-slung physique acts like a sponge, absorbing each little bit of moisture from the grass. His lengthy, luxurious fur collects mud like a trophy, and his tiny paws depart a path of soggy prints throughout the deck.

The Bathtime Battle

The bath itself is always a struggle. Rue, ever the escape artist, will wriggle and squirm, hoping for a last-second getaway. It doesn’t matter how little water we use to fill the bathtub; she shakes out of worry as if we had simply thrown her right into a lake!

Draper, in the meantime, goes limp, adopting a “if I need to endure this, I’ll be as unhelpful as potential.” The one silver lining for Draper is that after he’s good and clear, he’ll get the true royal remedy and get somewhat blowout (sure, we truly do brush + blow dry Draper’s fur…and sure, he truly does find it irresistible!).
